IQNA – Using the word “Israel” to refer to the Tel Aviv regime has been banned in Iraq’s media outlets, an official said.

Commission of Media and Communications (CMC) in Iraq

Ali Almuayid, head of the Commission of Media and Communications (CMC) in Iraq, said the press and media must use “the Zionist regime” instead of Israel.

The ban has been introduced given the recent developments in the Gaza Strip and a law passed on criminalization of attempts to normalize ties with the Zionist regime, he said.

It is also in line with fulfilling the human, religious and ethical duty, he stressed.

Using the word “Israel” could somehow be a kind of legitimizing the Zionist entity, Almuayid said.

The directive about the ban was issued in December 2023 but has just been published in the media.

In May 2022, Iraq’s parliament passed a law making it illegal for the country to ever normalize its relations with the Zionist regime.
